Flights
The airport to fly into is Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). There are not other options. We recommend searching Google Flights, which allows searching several flights at once. Southwest prices do not appear on Google flights or other aggregators, so try checking that separately.
If you have hotel or credit card points and would like help finding a good option, try reaching out to the helpful members of MilesTalk, the Facebook community that Sarah helps moderate, or email sarah@wanderingsideeye.com. If you would like professional assistance in planning your trip, please reach out to Julia with Rainbow Getaways.
As general travel advice, it is recommended to book your flight directly with the airline (as opposed to 3rd party sites like Expedia, Kayak, Priceline, etc.). The reason for this is that when problems occur (schedule changes, flight cancelations, unforeseen circumstances), it is 1000x easier to ask for changes or accommodations if you can directly speak to the airline. When you book via a 3rd party, you must speak to that business and they might be limited in what they can do for you.
There are many options if you are willing to connect in another city. Below, we have listed for convenience the nonstop options for most of our guests.
Coming From the SF Bay Area
San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
- Alaska Airlines
- United Airlines
San Jose International Airport (SJC)
- Alaska Airlines
Coming From Seattle
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
- Alaska Airlines
- Delta Airlines
Coming From Greater Los Angeles
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Alaska Airlines,
- American Airlines,
- Delta Airlines
- JetBlue Airways
- United Airlines
John Wayne International Airport (SNA)
- Southwest Airlines
Spirit also has a nonstop but we love you and highly suggest you make more reliable choices.
On arrival, remember to IGNORE the people standing between baggage claim/customs and the exit! They are trying to get you to commit to a timeshare preview in exchange for gifts. Sometimes the gifts are worth it, but unless you have a lot of time, just say no and keep walking. Even if they say they are arranging transportation to your hotel – don’t get caught unless you want to be caught.
Location
Hacienda Antigua is located approximately 1 hour north of Puerto Vallarta and 20 minutes north of Sayulita. Visit the FAQ page for a detailed map to give your driver.
Getting Around
Car Rentals
You do not need a car for your visit to the Puerto Vallarta area as there are plenty of taxis, Ubers, and shuttles available, and the roads and driving norms might be a little different than you’re used to. For this reason we do not recommend renting a car.
If you do rent one, research the insurance details and requirements, and be prepared to put down a hefty deposit even if you believe you have outside coverage that will work. (Around the world, I usually rely on the collision & liability coverage provided as a benefit on one of my credit cards, but for my last Puerto Vallarta car rental I needed a coverage letter from the card company beforehand, and still had to argue at the counter to avoid buying their insurance, and even then I still had to allow the company to charge – a charge, not a hold – a refundable deposit of more than $1000.)
Check out this AutoSlash article to stay informed, and I highly recommend their rental pricing search engine. Generally, it is recommended to go with a local rental agency over the global chains.
The wedding location is a bit remote, and there is limited parking – if you are planning to drive, please let us know in advance, and please be willing to come with a full car. Otherwise, we recommend a shuttle or taxi.
Shuttles
We are planning to arrange shuttles to the venue from a few key locations. You will be able to reserve your spot when you RSVP.
Ridesharing
Lyft does not operate in the Puerto Vallarta area. Ubers are plentiful, but if you want to call one from the airport then you will need to cross the pedestrian bridge to be picked up at the street level outside of the airport area. Turn left when you exit the international arrivals and you’ll see the bridge.
While it is simple to hail an Uber in Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta, trying to get one in Sayulita is very very hard. To get to the wedding venue, you will need to plan on a taxi or a shuttle if you’re not beginning in Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta. To return to your hotel from the wedding venue, prior arrangements will need to be made (we are working on shuttle arrangements).

Our group rate has been extended to February 29, 2024! We have 5 guaranteed rooms remaining so please make sure to secure your room asap if you plan to stay within our block. We are not certain how the extension will impact the deposit and cancellation dates.
One night’s deposit via credit card is required to reserve your room, and the balance is due February 18, 2024. Due to the discounted rate, no cancellation is allowed after February 18, 2024. Please be aware that the hotel will charge in pesos and uses a set exchange rate that varies monthly – this adds approximately $8/night to the room rate. Be sure to use a card with no foreign transaction fees.
While we do not have a dedicated booking site, you may call +52 329 689 0447 ext 7709 for Miguel Ruiz Nandi or email (ReservationsCOE@Marriott.com) and reference the Johnson/Dean Wedding to make a reservation. Note that if you call Marriott directly they will not be able to see the room block. If you call the number and do not reach Miguel, the front desk will not be able to book the rate and they will redirect you to the main reservations line, which will not be able to see the block. We highly recommend you book via email if you’re unable to get through via phone. Click the button below for an email template.
We’ve secured this room block (15 rooms) so that there is a stable option for our guests, but if it doesn’t fit your needs then feel free to chose another place that does! There are a ton of lodging options at various price points. Some suggestions are provided here.

Travel FAQs
Passports
I don’t have a passport, can I still come?
Absolutely, but you need to apply immediately. You DO need a passport to come to our wedding. Please check out this site for information.
To apply for a new passport, you should allow ample time (at least 3 months) for your application to be processed and your passport to be mailed to you. You will need this form, two passport-style photos, and $ for non-expedited passports.
My passport expires soon. What should I do?
You have time to have it renewed, but be sure to mail it in by February 20th at the latest to allow enough time. While Mexico only requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your trip, a generally good rule of thumb is to ensure that it will be valid for 3-6 months after you return home. If your passport does not meet this threshold then we strongly encourage you to get it renewed before your trip.
Do I need a visa to visit Mexico?
U.S. citizens coming from the U.S. and staying less than 180 days do not need a visa. If you are entering Mexico by land, you do need a tourist card (FMM).
What travel precautions can I take?
Register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. In the case of an emergency you’d be easier to contact.
Reservations
When should I book by?
Book your flights and hotel as soon as you’re sure you’ll attend! We recommend booking no later than the RSVP deadline, which is December 1st. Click the button below to add it to your calendar.

What’s the best way to book my trip?
Please refer to the above sections for room block and flight information.

Money/Currency
What do I do about money and currency exchange?
Mexico uses pesos (MXN). Though often you can pay for things using US dollars, usually this will result in you paying a higher price. The easiest/cheapest ways to handle money are to use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, to use a debit card at a Mexican ATM* to withdraw local currency, or to bring USD cash and exchange it at a casa de cambio. We encourage you to read Sarah’s Travel Basics page on her blog.
*Make sure you understand the fee structure for your debit card. There is a fee that your bank charges, and there is a fee that the ATM charges – the goal is to find a way to pay neither. This is explained in more detail on Sarah’s blog. When withdrawing money [with your no-foreign-transaction-fee card], you’ll want to decline the ATM’s conversion rate (choose withdraw in MXN, not USD) so that your bank will do it for cheaper.
Language
I don’t speak Spanish. Will I have a hard time?
You might end up paying the “tourist tax” but you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting around. It would help to learn some common phrases, but typically if you can plan most of your moves in advance then it is easier to do it without being proficient in the local language.
some tips:
- Download Google Translate – you can enter translations, or record a conversation and get real-time translations, or even take a photo of another language and have the image translated.
- try Duolingo! – you can do just 10 minutes of Spanish lessons each day and learn enough vocabulary to be comfortable.
Phones
Will my phone work in Mexico
Check with your phone plan – many plans allow you to use your same plan in Mexico with no additional charges. Even some pay-as-you-go plans like Cricket Wireless include Mexico for free. Michael’s cell phone provider doesn’t even offer his plan anymore and it includes Mexico gratis, which is Michael’s favorite Spanish word during our vacations (nobody tell him it’s not Spanish!).

What if I run into problems?
If you are having a problem with arranging your travel, feel free to email us at michaelandsarah@wedding.wanderingsideeye.com.
In general, it helps to be prepared for common scenarios:
Remember to build buffer time into your plans so that if one piece falls apart, it doesn’t impact the rest. We recommend arriving at least the day prior to the wedding.
If your flight is delayed or cancelled, look up an alternative itinerary that would work for you before/while you contact the airline. Many times it helps to reach out by phone rather than waiting until you and the rest of the plane reach the customer service desk.
Download the map area so that it is available to use offline.
Know where you are headed and around how much things should cost to minimize being taken advantage of.
If you run into a challenges en route to the wedding, please contact our coordinator, Miguel.
